This Privacy Policy explains how ("we," "us"), the publisher of Wolf of Burgundy ("the Site"), collects, uses, and protects information. Our guiding principle is data minimization: we collect as little as possible, keep it as briefly as possible, and never sell it.

1. Who We Are (Data Controller)

The data controller for the Site is reachable at [email protected]

2. Information We Collect

Information you provide voluntarily:

  • Newsletter subscription: your email address, if you subscribe.

  • Comments: the name or pseudonym, comment text, and email address (if required by the comment system) you choose to submit.

  • Correspondence and tips: anything you choose to send us by email or through our contact/tip channels.

Information collected automatically:

  • We use privacy-respecting analytics and do not store personal identifiers. We see aggregate data only (page views, referrer, country-level location, browser type).

  • Our hosting provider may log IP addresses and technical request data for security and operational purposes, subject to its own retention practices.

  • We do not use advertising trackers, third-party ad networks, or cross-site tracking, and we do not sell or share personal information for advertising purposes.

3. Sources and Confidential Tips

We treat the identity of sources and tipsters as confidential to the fullest extent we are able. If you wish to share information with us anonymously, we encourage you to use channels that do not reveal your identity to us or to third parties (for example, an encrypted messaging app or an email account not linked to your name). Please note:

  • We cannot guarantee anonymity for information sent through ordinary email or third-party platforms, whose operators keep their own logs and may be subject to legal process.

  • We do not voluntarily disclose source identities. However, we may be legally compelled to produce records in response to a valid subpoena or court order, and third-party providers (email, hosting, payments) may receive such demands directly and respond without our knowledge or consent.

  • The safest tip is one that never contains your identity in the first place.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information described above only to: operate and secure the Site; send the newsletter to subscribers who requested it; display comments; respond to correspondence, correction requests, and legal notices; and understand aggregate readership. We do not use your information for profiling, targeted advertising, or automated decision-making.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process personal data on the following bases: your consent (newsletter, comments), our legitimate interests (site security, aggregate analytics, responding to correspondence, and journalism/publication activities), and compliance with legal obligations. Our editorial activities may also benefit from applicable exemptions for journalistic purposes.

6. Sharing of Information

We do not sell personal information. We share information only with: service providers who host the Site, deliver the newsletter, or process comments (each acting under their own terms); professional advisors (legal, accounting) under confidentiality; and authorities where required by law. If the Site's ownership changes, information may transfer to the successor under this same policy.

7. Retention

  • Newsletter emails: kept until you unsubscribe.

  • Comments: kept while the article remains published, or until you request deletion.

  • Correspondence: kept as long as needed for the purpose it was sent, then deleted. Correspondence relevant to published reporting may be retained for the life of the publication as part of our editorial records.

  • Aggregate analytics: contain no personal identifiers and may be kept indefinitely.

8. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent (such as unsubscribing from the newsletter at any time via the link in each email). California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know, delete, and correct; we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in the CPRA. EEA/UK residents may also lodge a complaint with their supervisory authority.

To exercise any right, contact [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. Note that rights of access, deletion, and correction do not extend to our editorial content or to unpublished journalistic material, which may be exempt under applicable law.

9. Children

The Site is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. Content on the Site concerns alcoholic beverages and is intended for readers of legal drinking age in their jurisdiction.

10. International Transfers

The Site is operated from the United States. If you access it from outside the U.S., your information will be processed in the U.S., where privacy laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction.

11. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Send us sensitive information at your own judgment — and see Section 3 before sending anything you would not want attributed to you.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date reflects the current version. Material changes will be noted on the Site.
